Although fruits in general are a great food to incorporate into your paleo diet and recipes, there are some fruits that tend to be lower in sugar, or offer more nutritional value than others. This is especially important to people who are following the paleo diet primarily to lose weight or follow a paleo + low carb diet. Many fruits are also high in fructose, with tropical fruits usually having the highest fructose levels.

Below is a few of the fruits that are lowest in sugar content and/or high in nutrients and antioxidants, as well as a few that are highest in sugar content or may offer less nutritional bang for your buck.

Low-Sugar Fruits

Berries
Some great berry choices include blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, huckleberries, salmon berries and gooseberries. All of these berries are full of antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients, plus they taste great. They may be small but they pack a big nutritional punch. They can also be a great way to top a salad and add a unique twist to the flavor.

Cherries
Cherries do tend to be a little high in sugar, but like berries they are very high in antioxidants. They’re low in carbohydrates and also contain a great amount of fiber.

Apples and Pears
Apples and pears are a pretty common fruit choice for many people, but that’s for good reason. They are low in sugar and contain a fair amount of fiber.

Grapefruit
Grapefruits are a great choice for followers of the paleo diet, who are also watching their carbohydrate intake because they are relatively low in sugar. They can also make a great addition to salads, to add a little extra and unexpected flavor.

Figs
Figs are often a forgotten fruit, but they are a great addition to your paleo diet; figs are low in sugar and have a lot of fiber.

Citrus Fruits
In particular, lemons and limes are very low in sugar and can be used in a variety of ways, often in the form of flavor-full additions to fish, salads, vegetables and beverages.

High Sugar Fruits

The following fruits are among the highest in sugar, so it’s best to eat them sparingly, particularly if your goal by going paleo is to lose weight, or you’re taking a specifically low-carb approach to your paleo diet.

Cantalopes and watermelons
Very high in sugar content

Mangoes and Papayas
They tend to be very sugary, and some people recommend opting for a banana instead.

Pineapple
Although very high in sugar, pineapple is also a good source of bromelein, which is vital to joint health and inflammation. It is recommended that pineapple be enjoyed in moderation.

Dried Fruits
Some followers of the paleo diet do incorporate dried fruits into the foods they consume, but it isn’t advised that you make dried fruit a big part of your diet. Dried fruit tends to be very high in sugar, compared to its fresh counterparts.

    Grapes are included in the fruit pictured with this article, however, grapes are not mentioned in either the “High Sugar” or the “Low Sugar” categories. I would be interested to know where they fit in to the scale.
