Eating like a caveman, and following the paleo diet has been shown to have numerous health benefits, and among the most important deals with Type 2 diabetes, which is the most common form of diabetes. Studies comparing the Mediterranean diet and the paleo diet in people with diagnosed Type 2 diabetes have shown that the paleo diet is actually more beneficial in the control of diabetes, as well as the reversal of symptoms. After only 12 weeks, research participants following the paleo diet were shown to have an improved glucose tolerance, as compared to their research counterparts who were following the Mediterranean diet.
Since the paleo diet restricts sugars and grains, it also has a very low glycemic load. The glycemic load is a measurement of how the insulin in the body responds to the consumption of certain foods. Diets that have a low glycemic load are beneficial in the control of one’s blood sugar levels.
The paleo diet also counteracts the symptoms of diabetes because the foods eaten while on the diet are conducive to the supply of a constant stream of energy, rather than the energy spikes one obtains from eating highly processed or sugary foods. You may recognize an increased feeling of energy after eating a doughnut, but then shortly thereafter you’re likely also experiencing a “crash.” This is not the case with the foods eaten on the paleo diet. The energy you’re receiving from the foods being eaten provide you with constant energy, and don’t cause spikes in blood sugar.
In addition to the reduction of carbohydrates, research has shown the paleo diet is also beneficial for those afflicted with diabetes because of the reduced consumption of dairy products. Dairy products contain a bioactive substance called casein, which has been shown to affect how carbohydrates and fats are metabolized by the body.
As Type 2 diabetes runs rampant through our society, it is wise to take a look at our caveman ancestors, who lived without this disease entirely, and take cues from their diet. There is a great deal of research to show that the paleo diet is one of the best tools to help fight and control Type 2 diabetes, rather than letting it become an even bigger epidemic in our society.
