Time to bust out the Cod Liver Oil
Winter is here.. or is it just me wearing three layers and a beanie?
Ok, so it’s still reaching 20 degrees or so during the afternoons, but the mornings are freezing, dark … and freezing, which is enough for me to say winter is starting to set in.
With winter comes shorter days, which means less sunlight for those who work indoors all day. Compared to summer where darkness would only last 7-8hrs a day, winter provides darkness for around 13hrs a day. So in other words, you’ll generally get to work just as the sun starts to rise, and you’ll leave work when it’s going down.
Sunlight provides us with nutrients, in particular Vitamin D; standing out in the sun would have to be one of the most efficient and easiest ways of obtaining Vitamin D. Some other sources of Vitamin D include; Salmon, Herring, Tuna, Sardines, Organic mushrooms and Organic Eggs.
Due to the lack of sun we get during winter, we must obtain enough Vitamin D through food sources to maintain good health, Vitamin D plays an important roll in our kidneys to helps absorb calcium for bone strength, and it also assists in the proper function of muscles and nerves.
Most people however don’t eat enough salmon, herring, tuna, sardines and other foods rich in Vitamin D every day to keep their Vitamin D levels high, although a lot of cereals and milk products are now being fortified with Vitamin D, it’s important to note that this vitamin D is a man made synthetic form of vitamin D which the body doesn’t recognise and absorb efficiently, cereal and milk are also high in sugar which reduces the absorption of Vitamin D, so in reality the two are counteracting each other.
In comes Cod Liver Oil (CLO) which is extremely rich in vitamin D and vitamin A, so much so that one tablespoon of CLO will provide well over the recommended daily intake for these vitamins. CLO not only contains more vitamin A and vitamin D per unit weight than any other food source, but it also consists of essential omgea3 fatty acids which are well researched showing many health benefits including:
