Many people may opt to follow a paleo diet for health reasons that have nothing to do with weight loss or looking great, and these health benefits of being paleo are a terrific reason to eat well, but when you’re eating well, you’re likely going to shed those extra pounds. The paleo diet, when followed correctly, will help you lose weight and keep the pounds off.

The big reason you’re going to lose weight when you go paleo is that you’re cutting out the empty calories and the extra “junk” from your diet. A main principle of eating paleo is that you’re eating whole foods, those foods that our bodies are genetically predisposed to eat, without eating the garbage that is manufactured and created in a factory. All the bread, pasta, bagels, doughnuts, packaged meals and sugar-filled foods are just unnecessary calories without any nutritional value. All of these foods, particular those made with refined flour are just turned to sugar in your body, and when these extra carbohydrates and sugars aren’t used immediately by your body, they’re going to be stored as fat.

In addition, these sugary carbohydrates aren’t going to satisfy your hunger or fuel your body for a long period of time, so why bother eating these foods? Protein has been shown time and time again to make you feel fuller and more satisfied for longer, and also to provide you with energy over a longer period of time. When you’re consuming sugar or carbohydrates you may feel the initial rush of energy, but that’s going to quickly dissipate and leave you feeling more drained than you did before your sugary snack. When you’re consuming foods that create a spike in your blood sugar, you’re also wreaking havoc on your cortisol and insulin levels, which inevitably leads to weight gain.

When you’re eating paleo, you’re fueling your body with high quality foods– proteins, vegetables, and fruits that are packed with nutrients, fiber and healthy energy, to contribute to muscle growth and increased energy levels because your blood sugar levels will be more balanced.

When you’re deriving your nutrients and fiber from high-quality foods, you’re not going to be as tempted to reach for a sugary snack to satisfy your hunger. When you’re consuming sugar and carb-filled foods, it can become a dangerous cycle, because you’re energy levels are constantly rising and falling and you’re feeling hungry more often, thus making you fall victim to the temptation of a quick snack or a giant cup of coffee to keep you going throughout the day.

Keeping your blood sugar levels balanced and your diet full of whole, nutritious foods isn’t just going to make you feel great, but you’re also going to look your best.
